11 Myths about Vaping and their Truths

11 Myths about Vaping and their Truths

Did you know that until 2018, nearly 14 out of 100 adults in the USA smoked cigarettes?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),  nearly 34.2 million adults in the USA are still smoking cigarettes.

The same report by CDC shows that smoking cigarettes cause over 480,000 deaths annually in the USA, of which 41,000 deaths are due to second-hand smoking.  This means smoking is a big health problem in the US, but now we can do something about it!

Enter e-cigarettes. It can be hard for smokers to quit smoking, and e-cigarettes and vaping bring many positive benefits.  Sadly, there are many misconceptions about vaping. In this post, we will bust some of the biggest myths.

Myth 1: Vaping is as harmful as smoking

Nearly 40% of smokers think that nicotine causes cancers. They also think that vaping does the same harm as smoking.

Truth:

This myth is not true at all. Most people do not have enough information about vaping. According to Public Health England (PHE) vaping is 95% less harmful than tobacco.

Burning cigarettes generates over 7,000 chemicals, out of which 69 contain potential carcinogens.

Vaping devices come with very different ingredients. The primary ingredients in vape liquids are propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG) and flavours.

A study by the University College of London has shown that vaping can save the lives of 6,000 smokers annually within the UK. Studies have also proven there are no risks to the health of bystanders through passive vapor from e-cigarettes.  This makes vaping a lot safer for smokers and for the people around them.

Myth 2: Vaping never helps to quit smoking

Truth:

An article published on the Harvard Health Publishing referred to the research including 900 smokers who wanted to quit smoking.

Half of those people randomly received vaping devices. The other 50% received other nicotine replacement products.

The result showed that 18% of those who were vaping had quit smoking. This is far better than the 10% of users in the study who stopped smoking with the help of other nicotine replacement products.

Almost 80% of the people who stopped smoking continued with vaping. The health risks of those users became lower because of their reduced exposure to smoke and its many poisonous ingredients.

Myth 3: Vaping causes more addiction

It is a fact that smoking leads to addiction. This is because cigarettes contain nicotine which is an addictive substance. But let’s debunk the myth that vaping causes more addiction.

Truth:

Scientific studies have proved that nicotine vaping is not as addictive as cigarettes.

A study by Virginia Commonwealth University has found that vaping devices contain a much lesser quantity of nicotine than cigarettes.

High nicotine content and other added chemicals make cigarettes addictive. So, the myth saying vaping is more addictive is not true.

Myth 4: Vaping encourages teenagers to vape

Another myth resurfaces from time to time that vaping devices encourage teenagers to start vaping as an alternative to cigarettes.

Truth:

The truth is that cigarette smoking is widespread among high school students in the USA.

According to the CDC, 1 in 4 high school students used some kind of tobacco product in 2018.

The CDC figures also show that 20.8% of high school students have vaped at least once in the past 30 days. They were mostly vaping cannabis rather than nicotine.

Vaping product manufacturers do not encourage teenagers to start this habit. If they are already smoking cigarettes, pre-mixed pod vaping will be much less harmful for them.

Myth 5: Vaping harms others who passively inhale the vapor

Passive or second-hand smoking is associated with cigarette smoking. Many believe vaping has the same effect on others.

Truth:

The truth is that cigarettes are more dangerous when it comes to passive smoking.

A study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) shows a comparative analysis between the effects of second-hand vaping and second-hand smoking. The report states that apparently vaping poses no risk to human health.

Myth 6: Vaping devices can explode

This myth has been making the rounds due to various news stories. People incorrectly relate stories of electronic devices exploding while using or in pockets. It is important to debunk this myth.

Truth:

The truth is vaping devices are not explosive. People need to learn about battery safety.

Using vaping devices safely will never cause the device to explode in your pocket or hand.

An advantage of using a Podvapes™ device is that they are low powered with no settings to adjust or buttons to push. There is practically zero risk of injury from a Podvapes™ battery.

Myth 7: Vaping leads to Lung Disease

Another myth that has been floating around in the vaping industry is that vaping causes lung disease, or commonly known as “popcorn lung.”

Truth:

This claim is outright false when we check the facts.

Lung disease in the USA occurred when black market THC vaping liquids containing Vitamin E Acetate were used by the victims.  These liquids caused the reported illnesses across the US.

Popcorn lung can occur when diacetyl is consumed into the lungs. Diacetyl (also called 2,3-butanedione) is a chemical that has been used to give butter-like and other flavors to food products, including popcorn. Diacetyl is no longer found or used in nicotine e-liquids.

According to Dr. Michael Siegel from Boston University, cigarettes still contain up to 750 times more harmful diacetyl than was previously used in vaping liquids. (No wonder tobacco smokers get sick!)

Myth 8: Vaping E-Liquids contain poisonous Anti-Freeze

This myth says vaping products contain propylene glycol (PG) that is also used in anti-freeze and is poisonous to humans.

Truth:

The truth is propylene glycol is used in vaping e-liquids and it is also sometimes used as an additive for anti-freeze. PG has a lower freezing point than water, and it is not dangerous. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recognized PG as safe for human consumption. It is available in a wide range of food additives, pharmaceutical inhalers, and toothpaste.

Myth 9: Vaping exposes users to formaldehyde

This myth says vaping at highly elevated temperatures expose vapers to formaldehyde. It is a chemical compound containing oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon. Exposing to formaldehyde may cause health problems such as occupational asthma, irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat.

Truth:

The myth is based on the flawed study in 2015. It stated that the content of formaldehyde in vaping products was five to 15 levels higher compared to regular cigarettes.

The CDC released a study officially debunking the myth saying that levels of formaldehyde are not more than the levels associated with everyday air.

Myth 10: There are no regulations for vaping

Anti-vaping activists have been claiming that vape shops and manufacturers are doing this business without any regulations.

Truth:

Most companies in the vaping business do extensive testing to ensure that they release high-quality products into the market. All reputable brands have their e-liquids manufactured in ISO certified laboratories.

Vaping businesses also follow the strict regulations that the FDA has created to manufacture and sell quality vaping products.

Myth 11: Vaping is about providing an alternative to non-smokers

The final one in the list of myths is that vaping aims to offer an alternative habit to non-smokers instead of smoking. At Podvapes™, we know this is most definitely a myth.

We say, “If you don’t smoke, then don’t start vaping”.

Truth:

The truth is no vaping product manufacturer persuades non-smokers to start vaping. If people are already smoking tobacco, it will be healthier if they vape instead. Podvapes™ and other reputable vaping businesses repeatedly state that if you do not smoke tobacco and do not vape, then never start vaping. The claim on encouraging non-smokers to start vaping is thus incorrect.

Before We Go

Despite the negative and misleading media reporting on vaping, the vaping industry is growing due to increasing awareness of people. It is true that vaping is not completely harmless. However, it is far less harmful compared to cigarette smoking.

If you are smoking tobacco, vaping could be the better alternative you are looking for. Make sure you buy high quality nicotine pre-mixed pods rather than mixing e-liquids yourself. It’s a lot easier and safer.
